Did You Know…
Every bridge should have a small plate with the bridge number on it. To the uninitiated the numbering system can seem confusing but it's really very simple:
- Bridges maintained by the Canal and River Trust are numbered, starting from the Liverpool end of the canal, starting at 1 (Carolina Street).
- Bridges maintained by the local authority have a letter after the number, in alphabetical order from the numbered CRT bridge.
- Bridges between Liverpool and Carolina Street have a letter and no number. They are all maintained by the local authority
- Some bridges have been removed or added since the numbering system was put in place, so you'll find gaps in the number or letter sequence.
This description assumes that the system has been corrected in accordance with S116 The Transport Act 1968.
