Ash Street Memorial

On the night of 7th May 1941, bombs fell on the Co-operative society building, on the corner of Ash Street and Stanley Road in Bootle, while hundreds of people were sheltering in the basement.

Thirty seven people lost their lives. This memorial to the tragedy on Ash Street was officially unveiled on May 1st 2009.

Of a population of about 50,000 nearly 2,000 people were killed in air raids on Bootle during WW2, and over 15,000 homes destroyed.  Over 90% of all housing was damaged during the raids.
